Borussia Dortmund vs Stuttgart
Competition: Germany Bundesliga
Date: 9 March 2019
Kick-off: 15:30 CET
It’s obviously not easy, but Borussia need to… get their act together, or else, they risk wasting all the fantastic effort they’ve put into all season. Their shocking 2-1 defeat at Augsburg last weekend means they are now level on points with Bayern Munich, but still first in the table, thanks to a better goal difference. Midweek, their Champions League campaign came to an end, losing again to Tottenham, this time at home, 0-1 (they had lost in London as well, 3-0). Two horrible results in a row, which makes winning this game all the more important. If there are no late surprises, they should start the game with Bürki, Hakimi, Weigl, Akanji, Diallo, Witsel, Delaney, Sancho, Reus, Guerreiro and Götze. Lucien Favre doesn’t have injured Philipp and Piszczek at his disposal. Schmelzer was considered doubtful the day before the game.
Unlike Dortmund, Stuttgart were fantastic last weekend, destroying Hannover 5-1(!), and again, unlike Dortmund, they didn’t play midweek, having a whole week to work on getting ready for this match. That 5-1 over Hannover was Stuttgart’s first Bundesliga win in nine matches). Steven Zuber scored again (twice), in a third consecutive game, and even Mario Gómez scored, putting an end to a “goal-drought” that lasted several weeks. Stuttgart remain 16th in the table, meaning that if the season were over today, they would have to go through playoffs to avoid relegation. They are only two points behind 15th-placed Augsburg though. They are expected to start with Zieler, Beck, Pavard, Kabak, Kempf, Insua, Esswein, Ascacibar, Castro, Zuber and Gomez. The day before the game, Maffeo and Sosa were considered doubtful.
