Botafogo vs Atletico Mineiro
Competition: Brazilian Serie A
Date: 10 July 2017
Kick-off: 00:00 CET
Botafogo traveled to Montevideo midweek to face Nacional in the first leg of their Copa Libertadores round of 16 tie, having lost their three previous games in the championship and the Copa do Brasil without even scoring. Even so, they found it in them to grab a 1-0 win, which is not exactly guaranteeing them a ticket to the quarterfinals, but is definitely a great result. Off the field, the biggest news at Botafogo is that Clarence Seedorf, the Dutch legend who spent some time playing for the team in Brazil, has gone to courts demanding almost 4m BRL, about 1m EUR, claiming that it’s money Botafogo should have paid him, but never did.
Exactly the opposite to Botafogo. Atletico Mineiro had three straight wins in the championship and the Copa do Brasil before flying to Bolivia midweek to face Wilstermann in the Copa Libertadores, they had conceded just one goal in those three matches, just a few days earlier they had scored three against Cruzeiro in Belo Horizonte’s derby, but somehow they ‘managed’ to lose in Cochabamba, 1-0, and are now in trouble, since they will need to be extra careful defensively in the return leg, to not concede a goal that will oblige them to score at least three to qualify for the quarterfinals. Atletico were hoping to have midfielder Luan back for this game, he missed the derby against Cruzeiro and the trip to Bolivia, but new tests showed that his muscle problem is more serious than initially thought, and they actually have no idea when he’ll be back.
Botafogo vs Atletico Mineiro: Head-to-head Stats
Three wins for Botafogo, one draw, and one win for Atletico in the last five games between these two in Rio de Janeiro. Atletico’s win was back in 2012 though.
Botafogo vs Atletico Mineiro: Prediction
Both teams looked super different midweek to what they looked in their three previous games, making any prediction on how their clash will go look extremely tricky. I doubt Botafogo will lose, but I don’t trust them enough to win.
Botafogo vs Atletico Mineiro: Tips
‘Under 2.5 goals’ is at 1.80, which is not fantastic, but in such a game, with two remarkably unpredictable teams, it feels like a not so bad way to make something out of it.
