Botafogo vs Bahia
Competition: Brazilian Serie A
Date: 29 May 2017
Kick-off: 00:00 CET
Botafogo picked up their first points in the championship last weekend hosting Ponte Preta, beating them 2-0. On Thursday, they lost at Estudiantes in the Copa Libetadores, but they still qualified, as first in the group, since Barcelona lost as well, at Atletico Nacional. Botafogo are trying to strengthen their squad, and it seems that it’s a matter of days before they announce the signing of Cruzeiro striker Marcos Vinicius. The one who is not joining Botafogo is Maicon, well-known from his impressive career in Europe. The right-back has been training at Botafogo for over a month now, he didn’t receive an offer, he did receive one from Avai, but turned it down as politely as possible, and according to his agent he is close to signing for a USA team, most probably an MLS club (it could also be a USL side).
Bahia beat Sport Recife in Salvador on Wednesday, to win the Copa do Nordeste title, the biggest they have won the last 15 years. Guto Ferreira, their coach, has made it clear that against Botafogo he is going to play with the best eleven he has available, without resting his regulars. It remains to be seen if this will work. Botafogo had a game as well midweek, but way less demanding, since they had already qualified for the last 16 of the Copa Libertadores before flying to Argentina to face Estudiantes. Colombian left-back Pablo Armero got sent-off in the dying minutes of the match last weekend at Vasco da Gama, which Bahia lost 2-1, and is unavailable.
Botafogo vs Bahia: Head-to-head Stats
Bahia have built a more than decent record visiting Botafogo. In their last five games in Rio de Janeiro, they have won twice, drawn once, with the hosts winning only two of those five games.
Botafogo vs Bahia: Prediction
Both teams played midweek, Botafogo had to travel to Argentina, Bahia played at home, Botafogo were… relaxed, already qualified before the game at Estudiantes, Bahia played a real final, so, maybe their midweek obligations evened each other out. Everything considered, I expect Botafogo to win, mostly because they have been consistent enough at home, unlike Bahia away from their home.
Botafogo vs Bahia: Tips
Botafogo’s win pays 1.75. For more than that, a win of their combined with a clean sheet is at 2.75. They haven’t conceded in their last two games at home, looking very solid.
