CA Brive vs La Rochelle
Competition: French Top 14
Date: 26 August
Kick off: 18:00 CET
La Rochelle were definitely the surprise package of last season in the rugby world as they came from the PRO D2 and rocketed their way to finish the group stages at number one, but fell in the semifinals and they also played semifinals in the European Challenge Cup before qualifying for this season’s European Champions Cup, the most important european competition for rugby union clubs. . They will want more of the same as they take on mediocre Brive first up.
The biggest thing that La Rochelle has to try and avoid after such a stellar rise is the second-season syndrome where they will now have targets on their backs and teams won’t be surprised by them anymore. They will probably still be smarting about a Red Card that cost them a chance to go further in the pay offs, but they will be ready to rebuild all over again. Such a tight knit group with spirit really shone through with La Rochelle, but they have also got a few stars to rely on, such as the barnstorming Rene Ranger and Tawera Kerr-Barlow. La Rochelle are breaking a lot of the mould of French rugby and it is a good thing, so hopefully they can continue this trend.
Brive managed a pretty respectable 8th spot last year, and they did it without much fuss or too much of a big budget, rather just some consistent and thoughtful performances. This is however their second finish at eight in two years, which shows they are not going backwards, but also shows they need to up their game a little to get going forward. Brive will want to rely on their home ground advantage as the little side has one of the most hostile stadiums for traveling teams to play at and they use that advantage as much as possible. They are one of the most frugal side in terms of budget so it would be great to see them succeed on rugby alone.
Next week La Rochelle travel to Stade Français while Brive travel to Lyon.
CA Brive vs La Rochelle: Head to Head Stats
In the six meetings these sides have had in the Top 14, it is a typical French spilt as they have each won all their home games making it three wins apiece. There have been some close games, but also some big home wins from Brive, that could happen this game too.
CA Brive vs La Rochelle: Prediction
Brive will put a lot of hope in their home ground voodoo as La Rochelle have shown they are a tough team to beat. They are also a team that does not feel the same French effect of playing away from home. It may be a tough game for Brive as they try and grind out a win, but if La Rochelle can get going first, they will out play the basic Brive side.
