Chapecoense vs Flamengo
Competition: Copa Sudamericana
Date: 14 September 2017
Kick-off: 00:15 CET
In the Sport Recife vs Ponte Preta match preview I shared my… shock at seeing Sport extend the contract of their coach, Vanderlei Luxemburgo, in the middle of a period of very poor form, explaining that the “shock” has to do with the country where that happened, Brazil, “where coaches usually get fired after 4-5 consecutive bad results”. Vinicius Eutropio enjoyed even less… tolerance at Chapecoense. After three consecutive defeats, the latest one last weekend at home to Cruzeiro, he got fired, after just two months in the job. Early July he had been hired to substitute Vagner Mancini, the coach who had led the team since the start of the season. Chape are 18th in the championship, and playing in the Copa Sudamericana is like a breath of fresh air for them, a chance to draw a line, push on “restart”.
Flamengo started the season aiming at doing great in the Copa Libertadores and winning the Serie A in Brazil. Mid July, and their targets have been… adjusted; do great in the Copa Sudamericana, and finish in the top four of the Serie A, so as to play Copa Libertadores football next season as well, without going through qualifiers. Plus, they have the return leg of the Copa do Brasil final, against Cruzeiro, in Belo Horizonte. They have drawn 1-1 in Rio de Janeiro. The winner of the competition earns a direct ticket to the Copa Libertadores group stage as well. Last weekend, Flamengo lost 2-0 at Botafogo, getting totally outplayed by a team that looked much more motivated and determined to… bleed, if needed, to win the match. Coach Reinaldo Rueda left back in Rio three players who started the game against Botafogo, defensive midfielder Romulo, attacking midfielder Matheus Savio, and left winger Geuvanio.

Chapecoense vs Flamengo: Head to head Stats
Flamengo have back-to-back 3-1 wins at Chapecoense. Before that, Chape had beaten Fla 1-0, in 2014.
Chapecoense vs Flamengo: Prediction
Flamengo are considered favorites to win the match, and I have to agree, mostly because their roster is infinitely better than that of Chapecoense, and in games like this when the… survival in a competition depends on a game or two, you expect top players to rise to the occasion.
Chapecoense vs Flamengo: Betting Tips
Flamengo’s win is at 2.30 betting odds, and I’m going with that, leaving special bets aside.
