Chapecoense vs Sao Paulo
Competition: Brazil Serie A
Date: 2 December 2018
Kick-off: 20:00 CET
I can’t even begin to imagine what Chapecoense’s players went through these days, mentally. You could say, “it’s just football, it’s a game, teams get relegated, promoted, that’s normal”, and you’d be right, but Chape’s case is… special. Special, because of what happened two years ago(…), special also because no matter how… “dramatic” this may look, on this very day they are playing not just for the team’s stay in the Serie A, but even for the club’s survival. Chape are in trouble, financially, at courts, and they NEED the money coming from TV rights, which, in the Serie A, are much-much more than that in the Serie B. There are those who say that if they fall, it will be pretty much the end of the club, at least the way we’ve known it thus far. Last weekend they drew 0-0 at Corinthians, a point of pure gold, but not enough to save them – yet. They are on 41 points, first above the relegation line. If they win, obviously, they avoid relegation. If they draw, they need Fluminense not to lose to América Mineiro (on 40 points), and Santos not to lose to Sport Recife (on 39 points). If they lose and América draw with Fluminense in Rio de Janeiro, Chape go down, because they’ll be level with América, same wins (10 each), but with worse goal difference. Obviously if they lose, they go down if Sport Recife win their home game against Santos. Chape players are holding the team’s fate in their hands, it depends on them, more than what it depends on other teams.
Sao Paulo are not playing their… future in this match, but they do care about the points. They are 5th in the table, on 63 points, as many as Gremio, who are 4th. If Sao Paulo finish fourth, they go directly to next season’s Copa Libertadores group stage. If they finish 5th, they’ll need to play qualifiers, risking falling victims to a surprise, anything but uncommon in the qualifiers. Last weekend they drew 0-0 at home with Sport Recife. They have won just two of their last 13 matches, and only one of their last eight on the road.

Chapecoense vs Sao Paulo: Prediction
Chape’s fans made the tickets disappear days before kick-off. I don’t expect a good game, technically, but I do expect Chape’s players to look like… there is no tomorrow. Will that be enough for them to win? Deep down, I think yes. I see them score… half a goal more than Sao Paulo.
Chapecoense vs Sao Paulo: Betting Tips
Chape’s win pays 2.15. I feel it should be higher, but even at 2.15, I’m taking it.
