Connacht vs Newport Gwent Dragons
Competition: Guinness Pro12
Date: 18 February 2017
Kick-off: 18:45 CET
While Connacht managed to grab a well deserved win, in a tight match against the Cardiff Blues, for the Dragons, it was a weekend to forget. But this weekend these two teams come into the game with two very different agendas as the defending champions Connacht want to get onto a better roll now while Dragons want to get a much needed win under the belt.
The Dragons caught the wrong side of Munster who, for missing a lot of important Irish test players, still managed to rampage them in a 45-17 spanking away from home. Gwent are really not in a good place near the middle of the season as the only sides keeping them company are the two Italians near the bottom of the log, as the Dragons sit in 10th with 19 points. Points scoring has been the issue as in their 14 games, they have only scored 24 tries, and in contest, Treviso have scored just two less than that.
Connacht are the defending champions, but their season last year was a bit of a freak one and very unexpected, they have not been exactly the same side this year, and their coach has said he is leaving, so things have stuttered. Still, Connacht are not doing to badly, they are in 8th, but they are in reaching distance of seventh and Cardiff, but the issue is the Top six are comfortably better off than the rest of the chasing pack. Connacht did manage to make ground on Cardiff when they beat them by six points, coming back from being 13-7 down to win 19-13.
Connacht vs Newport Gwent Dragons: Head-to-Head Stats
Connacht can take the mental edge into this game in that they are the historical winners over the 27 games that have been played between these teams in the Pro12. In all, 17 wins have gone the way of the defending champs, while there have been just 10 wins for the Dragons.
Connacht vs Newport Gwent Dragons: Prediction
Connacht do not utilize their home ground advantage very well having an almost even 50-50 win ratio at home in the Pro12. What they will be relying on is how poor the Dragons have been this season knowing that they are a better team than them and they will have the confidence walking into this game. Connacht shouldn’t have any problems winning this game.
Connacht vs Newport Gwent Dragons: Tips
Even though Dragons are way down the log and not a very good defensive team, Connacht will not rip them apart like Munster did, they will win, but by an average margin of about 12 points.
