Corinthians vs Independiente
Competition: Copa Libertadores
Date: 3 May 2018
Kick-off: 02:45 CET
There are good news and bad news at Corinthians. Bad news is, they lost 1-0 at Atlético Mineiro last weekend, with their coach, Fábio Carille, admitting that the team looked tired, and he’ll need to… manage the squad in such a way that they reach the World Cup finals break having avoided major upsets. They already had two guys missing (midfielders Ralf and Renê Júnior won’t be back until after the World Cup), and they now have a third player out, right-back Fágner, injured, sidelined for a month. On the other hand, they do have a rich roster, with players eager to step in. Plus, they are leading in their Libertadores group, despite having played a game less than Deportivo Lara and Millonarios. Even a draw won’t be a horrible result for them against Independiente, as it will keep them first, four whole points above third-placed Millonarios. According to reports, Corinthians will start with Cássio, Guilherme Mantuan, Fabián Balbuena, Henrique, Sidcley, Gabriel, Maycon, Jádson, Rodriguinho, Ángel Romero and Clayson.
Unlike Corinthians, Independiente have just one guy missing, midfielder Jonás Gutiérrez, but that’s nothing new, as he has been out for some time. The lack of injuries seems to be giving them an edge in this game, but do keep in mind, last weekend they played with their best 11 at Newell’s Old Boys, a game they needed to win, and did win, 1-0 (they are fighting to secure a Copa Libertadores ticket for next season). The necessity to pick up all three points made their coach field his best possible 11, whatever that means about how… “fresh” they will look against Corinthians. On another note, Independiente are worried about the Peruvian referee. They have had a very bad experience with him, and they fear that he won’t think twice before favoring Corinthians in a crucial moment of the match. According to reports, they will start the game with Martín Campaña, Gastón Silva, Jorge Figal, Fernando Amorebieta, Alan Franco, Nicolás Domingo, Diego Rodríguez, Maximiliano Meza, Martín Benítez, Leandro Fernández and Emmanuel Gigliotti. They are on three points from four matches, a win obviously would be fantastic for them, but even a draw wouldn’t be a horrible result.

Corinthians vs Independiente: Head to head Stats
Corinthians have hosted Independiente twice in the past. They lost 2-1 in 1999, and won 2-1 two years later.
Corinthians vs Independiente: Prediction
Despite missing key players, I trust Corinthians to get something from this match. They have the roster to cope with problems like these. Win the game? I have my doubts on that.
Corinthians vs Independiente: Betting Tips
Corinthians’ double chance pays very little, 1.20. “Under 2.5 goals”, at 1.40, feels very probable, but again, pays too little. I hardly ever suggest a straight draw, but this is a special case. I feel it’s worth risking with it, at 3.00 betting odds. Both teams will be left somewhat satisfied with a draw, even Independiente.
