Corinthians vs Palmeiras
Competition: Brazil Serie A
Date: 5 August 2019
Kick-off: 00:00 CET
Things couldn’t be much better at Corinthians ahead of their huge Sao Paulo derby against city rivals Palmeiras. Obviously, they could be sitting higher than 8th in the table, but focusing on how things have gone for them after the Copa América break, someone sees that their record is almost perfect. They just eliminated Wanderers in Copa Sudamericana, beating them for a second time, in Montevideo. Later this month they will be facing Fluminense in the quarterfinals. Plus, last week they won 1-3 at Fortaleza, three of the seven goals they’ve scored in their last three matches. Another awesome thing about Thursday’s win in Montevideo was that they earned it without several key players, whom Fábio Carille chose to rest. Cássio, Fagner, Manoel, Gil, Danilo Avelar, Gabriel, Júnior Urso, Pedrinho, Sornoza (or Mateus Vital, or Matheus Jesus), Clayson and Vagner Love, this should be their starting lineup. Carille admitted that the only dilemma has to do with Sornoza, the only “regular” who may not start against Palmeiras. Corinthians are eight points behind Palmeiras in the table, but they have a game in hand, against Goiás, which will be held in a few days. In other words, come Wednesday night, the gap between the two could be down to just two points.
Corinthians are glad they are in the Copa Sudamericana quarterfinals, but Palmeiras are even happier to be in the Copa Libertadores last 8, after their resounding 4-0 win over Godoy Cruz at home a few days ago. It was a much-needed victory, their first in six matches in three competitions. They will be facing Gremio later this month, in the quarterfinals. Last weekend they drew 1-1 with Vasco da Gama at home, dropping second in the table, two points behind leaders Santos. Most betting companies still consider them top favorites to retain the Serie A title though. Luiz Felipe Scolari is expected to have Weverton, Marcos Rocha, Luan, Gustavo Gómez, Diogo Barbosa, Felipe Melo, Bruno Henrique, Raphael Veiga (or Gustavo Scarpa), Dudu, Willian and Deyverson (or Borja) in the starting lineup.

Corinthians vs Palmeiras: Head to head Stats
Four wins for Corinthians and one for Palmeiras in the last five Sao Paulo derbies between these two with Corinthians as hosts.
Corinthians vs Palmeiras: Prediction
Corinthians played on Thursday, but with reserves. Palmeiras played on Tuesday, but with their regulars. I don’t expect fatigue to be a major issue for any of the two. I see a draw, and in any case, not a Palmeiras win.
Corinthians vs Palmeiras: Betting Tips
Draw pays 3.00, which I find worth the risk. Corinthians’ double chance is at just 1.55, but goes up to 2.05 if combined with “under 2.5 goals”.
