Corinthians vs Racing Club
Competition: Copa Sudamericana
Date: 14 September 2017
Kick-off: 02:45 CET
As the media in Brazil were quick to point out, Corinthians’ “accomplishments” in the second round of the Serie A remind of a team that sits at the bottom four spots in the table, not a team that leads the league. Last weekend, Corinthians lost again, 2-0 at Santos, their third defeat in their last four games. They have only beaten Chapecoense since August 6, and that was thanks to an added-time goal. Interestingly, according to reports, coach Fabio Carille is going to start the game against Racing with exactly the same 11 he did versus Santos. Guilherme Arana, their 20-year-old left-back, would definitely play if he was available, but he’s going to miss his fourth consecutive match, having gotten injured, again, in training, a few days ago. He was great for Corinthians in the first half of the season, and his absence has definitely hurt the team these last weeks.
Same day Corinthians lost at Santos, Racing Club triumphed over Temperley in Argentina’s Superliga, 4-1, their first win of the season, after drawing at San Lorenzo on the opening day of the new Superliga campaign. Left-back Leandro Grimi and right-back Ivan Pillud picked up their third yellow cards in the Copa Sudamericana this season in Racing’s return leg against Medellin in the round of 32, and coach Diego Cocca is going to substitute them with Lucas Orban (left-back) and defensive midfielder Egidio Arevalo Rios. The latter is going to play in his natural position, and midfielder Augusto Solari is going to be… sacrificed and pulled back to cover the gap in the right-back position.

Corinthians vs Racing Club: Head to head Stats
Corinthians have hosted Racing Club once before, in 1998, in the Copa Mercosur, losing 2-1 (and 1-0 in Argentina).
Corinthians vs Racing Club: Prediction
If this game took place a month ago, 1.62 for Corinthians’ win would look good. Keeping in mind how poor the Serie A leaders have looked this last month, I have serious doubts they will manage to beat Racing Club. There is no doubt the Brazilians have a much more quality team, but their form lately has been… pitiful, and I can’t overlook that.
Corinthians vs Racing Club: Betting Tips
As already mentioned, I find it very hard to back this Corinthians, the Corinthians of the last month, to win this game. Betting on Racing’s double chance feels equally risky though. Deep down, I expect this game to be decided by a single goal, if any, so I’m going with under 1.5, at 2.60 betting odds.
