Cruzeiro vs Chapecoense
Competition: Brazilian Serie A
Date: 5 June 2017
Kick-off: 00:00 CET
Cruzeiro are not playing attractive football, but they have been getting the results the last three weeks. Seven points in three games in the Serie A, qualification for the next round of the Copa do Brasil (after their 0-0 draw at Chapecoense on Wednesday), these are accomplishments that cannot be overlooked, no matter if their football is almost… too boring to watch. Coach Mano Menezes told the Press that right winger Robinho and right-back Ezequiel are available, finally, after staying sidelined for weeks, both with muscular problems. Menezes also said that he could rest center-back Dede, and play Luis Caicedo instead, since, either way, the latter is leaving Brazil on Tuesday, to go join his national team (of Ecuador), and will miss the next games of the Serie A.
Two Chapecoense players were sent-off at the end of the Copa do Brasil game against Cruzeiro on Thursday, with the atmosphere at Arena Conda… boiling, as the hosts were left out of the competition. Chapecoense and Cruzeiro are two of the three teams that have seven points in three games so far in the championship, and are topping the table early in the season. Chape’s draw midweek came after three consecutive wins in the championship and the Copa Libertadores, all at home. They have now conceded just one goal in their last four matches, but, I repeat, all four were at home.
Cruzeiro vs Chapecoense: Head-to-head Stats
Since 2012, Cruzeiro have hosted Chapecoense six times, have beaten them in five of those games, with the visitors earning a single 1-0 victory in 2015.
Cruzeiro vs Chapecoense: Prediction
Cruzeiro were kind of… cynical on Thursday, earning that 0-0 draw at Chapeco, which was enough for them to qualify for the next round of the Copa do Brasil. In this game they will have to be more… creative. They have scored six goals in their last eight games, just six, while last time they managed to score twice in the same game was almost a month and a half ago, in a 2-0 win over America Mineiro. Everything considered, I’m actually backing the visitors to earn at least a draw. It seems almost… irrational, Cruzeiro’s win pays just 1.40, they are that big a favorite to win, but deep down I expect them to get… punished the same way, concede a goal, and struggle to even earn a draw.
Cruzeiro vs Chapecoense: Tips
‘Draw or Chapecoense’ pays 3.00, which shows what a big risk it is. Even so, I’m going with that, half because I really feel Chape will find a way to hurt the hosts, and half for the simple fact that I would love to see them do that against this boring Cruzeiro.
