Cruzeiro vs Corinthians
Competition: Brazil Serie A
Date: 9 June 2019
Kick-off: 00:00 CET
Cruzeiro’s goalkeeper Fábio is famous in Brazil for having an exceptional talent in “catching” penalties, and he did exactly that midweek again, when the Belo Horizonte side played against Fluminense in Copa do Brasil. The first leg had ended in a 1-1 draw, Cruzeiro went 0-1 down at home, made it 2-1, got equalized in added time, so the tie went to penalties. Fábio did “it” again, and Cruzeiro are in the quarterfinals. They qualified, but it’s been seven matches now without a victory (in 90 minutes). Mano Menezes tried to downplay the lack of wins, but Cruzeiro are on just seven points from as many matches in the Serie A, and they need to react now, before it’s too-too late. Fred got injured and had to get substituted on Wednesday, before the end of the first half. The day before this game it was unclear if he would be available. Egídio is out, having shown symptoms of dengue fever. Menezes is expected to have Fábio, Lucas Romero, Dedé, Léo, Dodô, Henrique, Ariel Cabral, Robinho, Thiago Neves, Marquinhos Gabriel and Sassá (or Fred) in the starting lineup.
Corinthians visited Flamengo midweek having won four games in a row in all competitions, and having kept four clean sheets in a row as well. Even so, I didn’t trust them, and suggested Fla’s victory. Corinthians lost 1-0, and got eliminated in Copa do Brasil, having lost 0-1 at home as well, in the first leg. Cássio and Fagner are unavailable because they joined Brazil’s national team. Goalkeeper Walter will substitute Cássio in this game and also against Santos in a few days. These two matches should be his last ones for Corinthians, as he is expected to leave. A couple of days ago, a top Corinthians official admitted that these next weeks, at least one key player will have to be transferred to Europe (most probably), because the club need the money to cover financial losses of the last 12 months.
