Crvena Zvezda vs Olympiacos Piraeus
Competition: Turkish Airlines Euroleague
Date: 26 January 2018
Time: 19:00 CET
Crvena Zvezda failed to be competitive against Maccabi Tel Aviv last week, as they fell by a harsh 89:75 on the road. Their opponents grabbed them by the throat early in the match, as Crvena Zvezda were already down by 47:29 at the end of the first half. They did score 23 points in each of the next two quarters, but it was not enough to change anything in that match. Besides Bjelica (13p), Rochestie (10p, 8as), and Lessort (10p), all the other players scored between 5 and 9 points with pretty bad shooting percentages. The team proved once again that they are not very good on the road, as they have now lost each of their last three road matches for the Euroleague. They are now sitting at the 12th spot of the Euroleague (W7 L12), in a triple tie with Barcelona and Brose Bamberg. All three teams are two wins behind the playoff spots. Crvena Zvezda have the fourth worst defense in the Euroleague with 82.10 conceded points per match, while scoring just 77.05 in the process.
On the other hand, Olympiacos Piraeus have been really unstable in the past couple of weeks, a product of the accumulated fatigue, and bad rotation. Someone would expect that the return of leader Vassilis Spanoulis from the injury would boost the team, but the reality is far different. He gets way too much playing time for a man his age, and he is not always helping the team. Coach Sferopoulos has made some really questionable choices in his rotation, and the result is a series of really imbalanced results lately. They suffered 30-point losses to Baskonia and Khimki Moscow on the road, but in between they defeated Maccabi Tel Aviv by 30 points at home. In their most recent match they were humiliated by Khimki Moscow on the road (82:54), in a match where Spanoulis had more turnovers (6) than points (5). Olympiacos Piraeus suffer hard at this point in the season, and a change in coach might revive their season. They are now sitting at the 3rd spot of the Euroleague though (W13 L6), still featuring the worst offense with 73.12 points per match, and the 2nd best defense with 72.47.
