CSKA Moscow vs Real Madrid
Competition: UEFA Champions League
Date: 2 October 2018
Kick-off: 21:00 CET
CSKA Moscow needed an added time penalty to earn a point at Viktoria Plzen two weeks ago, so you could call them lucky, but looking at how the whole game went, I’m left with the impression that the Russian side, even with that penalty deep into added time, earned what they deserved. They finished the match on almost double attempts, almost double on target as well, and slightly more ball possession. After going 2-0 down at halftime, they found it in them to fight back, shortened the gap very early in the second half, and got rewarded very-very late, salvaging a point in Czechia. They are on 16 points from nine matches in Russia’s championship. Last Friday they won 0-1 at Orenburg, thanks to another penalty, taken by Chalov, the guy who scored their first goal at Viktoria Plzen.
Real Madrid hosted Roma two weeks ago, in their first Champions League game without Cristiano Ronaldo in… centuries. Isco scored a gorgeous goal late in the first half to open the scoring, sort of simplifying things for the Merengues. Bale made it 2-0 in the 58th minute, and Mariano Díaz, back from Lyon, where he spent last season on loan, scored another beautiful goal in added time, putting the cherry on top. Things are not exactly… awesome at Real Madrid though. They lost 3-0 at Sevilla a week ago, and last weekend they got stuck to a goalless draw versus Atlético Madrid. They are on 14 points from seven matches in La Liga, level with Barcelona, who also dropped points in their latest matches.
