Debrecen vs Torino
Competition: UEFA Europa League
Date: 1 August 2019
Kick-off: 18:30 CET
“Torino and under 3.5 goals”, at 1.88, was the only tip here last week, and Debrecen… “managed” to concede less than four goals. That 3-0 has left them practically eliminated. Things could be slightly different if they had not conceded that third goal in the third minute of added time, but looking back at how those 90-something minutes went in Turin last week, I’m left with the impression that 3-0 is not the worst that could have… happened to Debrecen. Attempts were 20-4 for the Italian side, the on target ones were 7-0, Debrecen did not stand a chance… András Herczeg, Debrecen’s coach, was actually left satisfied with his team, admitting that they lost 3-0 to a much-much stronger side. “We could have avoided the first two goals, we could have defended better in added time, when we conceded again from a corner kick, we could have attacked more, all in all we would have done better, but it was clear that Torino are a very strong team, they deserved to win, and I congratulate them”, he said.
Simone Zaza did not start for Torino last week, he came off the bench in the 80th minute, and he scored the third goal in added time, turning an either way “clear” 2-0 win, into a “mission-qualification practically accomplished” 3-0. Walter Mazzarri was asked about Zaza in the Press conference, and said that he sent him in with 10 minutes left, because he thought he could help the team score a third goal they wanted, and that’s what happened. In other words, Mazzarri avoided focusing on why Zaza did not start, and instead talked about how important his short (time-wise) appearance was. Mazzarri also said that the game was not as easy as many expected, because Debrecen stayed disciplined in most of the 90 minutes.

Obviously, Torino do not need to win, but this is an official match, just their second this season, they are… thirsty for official games, and I expect them to take this seriously, beating Debrecen for a second time.
