Defensa y Justicia vs Banfield
Competition: Copa Sudamericana
Date: 22 August 2018
Kick-off: 00:30 CET
Defensa y Justicia were considered clear favorites to win their home game versus Atlético Tucumán last weekend, Tucumán’s double chance was at 2.05, and that was my only tip, expecting Defensa to drop points. They did, and actually they were somewhat lucky to avoid defeat. Early in the second half, they conceded, and to salvage a point they needed a very-very dubious penalty, late in the game, a refereeing decision that left Tucumán’s people fuming. Defensa are on two points from as many games in their championship in Argentina. In the previous Copa Sudamericana round they beat El Nacional (from Ecuador) 2-0 at home, in the first leg, and lost 1-0 in Quito, a result good enough to send them through to the second round. That 2-0 over El Nacional, on July 18, is their only win in their last five official matches.
Banfield hosted Gimnasia La Plata last weekend, “under 2.5 goals” (1.47), “no” on “both teams to score” (1.66), and “under 1.5” (2.50) were my tips, and they all came good, as the game had only one goal. Banfield won 1-0. Truth is, deep down I expected a goalless draw, and if there were a goal, I felt Gimnasia had better chances to score it, but Banfield earned a penalty very early in the game, Darío Cvitanich didn’t let the opportunity go wasted, and Banfield ended up picking up all three points, from a game that had both teams looking very similar, and draw would have been a more fair result. On a side note, Banfield’s – black – goalkeeper, Mauricio Arboleda, told Argentinian TV that Gimnasia’s captain, Fabián Rinaudo, called him “negro de mierda” (the translation in English is rather unnecessary), accusing him of racism. It remains to be seen if the football authorities in Argentina will move to do something about the incident. Banfield eliminated Boston River (from Uruguay) in the first round, losing 1-0 in Montevideo, but winning 2-0 at home.

Defensa y Justicia vs Banfield: Head to head Stats
Defensa have three wins in a row at home over Banfield. Before that, in 2013, the visitors had triumphed, 2-4.
Defensa y Justicia vs Banfield: Prediction
Defensa have a pretty impressive record at home, having won five of their last six matches there, but… their last victory was over a month ago, their great results as hosts were in the previous season. Last weekend, against Atlético Tucumán, they struggled to avoid defeat. I feel betting on Banfield’s double chance is worth it, seeing it pay better than Defensa’s win alone.
Defensa y Justicia vs Banfield: Betting Tips
“Draw or Banfield” is at 2.00, my main tip. “Under 2.5 goals” pays 1.50, little, but very probable to come good.
