Defensor Sporting vs Monagas
Competition: Copa Libertadores
Date: 18 April 2018
Kick-off: 00:15 CET
Defensor Sporting have every right to claim that they were robbed of at least one point at Cerro Porteño in their previous group match, one they lost 2-1. The first Cerro goal was… suspicious, it looked like scorer Diego Churín had pushed an opponent before heading the ball in. As for the second goal in the sixth minute of added time, there is no doubt Churín was offside, he was actually clearly offside, it was an easy call to make for the assistant referee, and it makes you wonder how he missed it. Having written all that, Defensor Sporting equalised 1-1 less than two minutes into the second half, but from one second to another, they stopped playing football. They tried every trick in the book to waste time, that’s partly why the game had six minutes of added time, because the referee kept more than normal, so maybe, just maybe, that super late offside goal was… divine justice for the Uruguayans’ frustrating mentality and choice to destroy the game in every way possible, instead of keeping playing football, trying to score a second goal. They are on just one point from two group matches, but the back-to-back games against Monagas could change things a lot. On Friday they beat Liverpool 1-0 thanks to an added-time goal. It was their third win in a row in Uruguay’s championship, they are third in the table, on 24 points from 12 matches.
No points in two matches in the group thus far, no goals scored, six conceded, things are not looking good for Monagas, who, at least, won their last game, at Caracas, their first victory after eight defeats and five draws(!). They hadn’t won a game since January 27(!). They are on 11 points from 12 matches in Venezuela’s championship, close to the bottom of the table. They look doomed in their Libertadores group, but they have back-to-back games against Defensor Sporting, so… not all hope is lost. Plus, keep in mind, all teams have a motive to finish at least third in their group, so as to continue in the Copa Sudamericana in the second half of the season.
