Deportivo Cali vs Junior
Competition: Copa Sudamericana
Date: 14 July 2017
Kick-off: 02:45 CET
Despite finishing just sixth (drawing in their last four games) in Colombia’s Apertura (regular season) in May, Deportivo Cali shocked Medellin in the quarterfinals to advance to the semis, where they faced city rivals America. With a win and a draw, they made it to the finals, where they looked set to upset Atletico Nacional as well. They beat them 2-0 in Cali, but the return leg in Medellin turned into a nightmare for them, losing 5-1. In the Clausura that started last weekend, Deportivo beat Envigado 4-2 at home. In the previous round of the Copa Sudamericana, Deportivo eliminated Sportivo Luqueno from Paraguay, thanks to the away goals rule (1-0 win at home, 2-1 loss on the road). Right-back Didier Delgado, 24, signed at Deportivo on Tuesday, and hours later, left-back Darwin Andrade, 26, arrived in Cali as well, to sign his contract at the club, having spent the last two seasons as Standard Liège.
Junior have won their last five games, two in the championship in May, two in Colombia’s Cup the last two weeks, and the first match of the new Clausura, last weekend, but this is not enough to make their fans forget how disappointing the first half of this year has been for them, finishing 12th(!) in the Apertura. They definitely look very improved though, having a total score of 5-0 in their three wins since June 29. This is their first Copa Sudamericana game this season. They started 2017 participating in the qualifying rounds of the Copa Libertadores. They beat Carabobo from Venezuela twice, they beat Atletico Tucuman at home as well, 1-0, but in the return leg they… it’s really hard to describe what happened, they conceded three goals in nine minutes(!), from 20′ to 29′, and all they managed before the final whistle was to make it 3-1 in the 84th minute. One more goal would have sent them to the group stage, but it never came.
Deportivo Cali vs Junior: Head-to-head Stats
Deportivo have four consecutive wins over Junior as hosts.
Deportivo Cali vs Junior: Prediction
These are the first few days of a new season in Colombia, so… it’s hard to tell where exactly teams are standing at. A Junior win would be a surprise, but it’s not like Deportivo Cali have the victory in their pocket. Failing to see a clear favorite in this match, I’ll just follow my hunch, and back Junior to earn at least a draw.
Deportivo Cali vs Junior: Tips
‘Draw or Junior’ pays 1.83, which is more than decent, taking into account how well the Barranquilla side has been doing the last two weeks. Just draw, is at 3.10, obviously a much bigger risk, if 1.83 is not enough for you.
