Deportivo Cuenca vs Wilstermann
Competition: Copa Sudamericana
Date: 20 July 2018
Kick-off: 00:30 CET
Deportivo Cuenca’s qualification over Sportivo Luqueño in the first round of the competition was… one to remember. They had lost 2-0 in Luque, Paraguay, and still without score back home in the 55th minute, they were left with 10 men. Amazingly, they took the lead in the 74th minute, but still needed another goal to take the tie to penalties. Four minutes later, they had another player sent-off(!). Unbelievably, despite playing nine against 11, they scored again in the 82nd minute, pushed the tie to penalties, and there, they beat Luqueño, a golden page in Deportivo Cuenca’s history, a black one in Luqueño’s. Unlike most other South American teams, the Ecuadorian ones played regularly throughout the World Cup finals. Just last weekend, Cuenca beat (leaders!) LDU Quito 2-0 away from home, on the last day of the championship’s first phase. They finished 10th, third-to-last, poor, but do keep in mind that they did better than any other team in the league the last four game weeks, picking up 10 our of possible 12 points.
Unlike Deportivo Cuenca, Wilstermann haven’t played an official match since June 6. That’s when they beat The Strongest on penalties, after a 2-2 draw, to win the championship in Bolivia. Gabriel Ríos, one of their attackers, got injured in training and missed the trip to Ecuador, but according to reports, Wilstermann will still play – sort of – offensively, looking for at least one goal. Arnaldo Giménez, Alejandro Meleán, Enrique Díaz, Ronny Montero, Óscar Vaca, Fernando Saucedo, Jorge Ortiz, Cristhian Chávez, Serginho, Gilbert Álvarez and Ricardo Pedriel should be the first 11. Captain Edward Zenteno is out after failing a doping test. What’s… super interesting is that Wilstermann, despite training for weeks now, chose not to play any friendly games(!).

Deportivo Cuenca vs Wilstermann: Head to head Stats
This is the first game ever between these two.
Deportivo Cuenca vs Wilstermann: Prediction
Cuenca have been very-very good for some weeks now, while Wilstermann are… a mystery, not having played since June 6, not having been tested in any friendly games since then. I have to back Cuenca to win the game, even by just half a goal.
Deportivo Cuenca vs Wilstermann: Betting Tips
The hosts’ win pays 1.90. They have been awesome defensively this last month, conceding just one goal in four matches. “Cuenca to keep a clean sheet” is at 2.20, if you don’t trust them enough to score and win.
