Emelec vs Melgar
Competition: Copa Libertadores
Date: 26 May 2017
Kick-off: 00:30 CET
Emelec picked up a massive-massive win at Medellin in their previous group game, and from outsiders they’ve earned the title of the absolute favorite to finish second. A win over lowly Melgar, who, though, have already beaten them in Peru, is sending the Ecuadorian side to the last 16 of the competition. Even if they draw or lose, they can still count on River Plate not to lose at home to Medellin. Crazy things need to happen for Emelec to miss out on that ticket to the next stage of the Copa Libertadores. Last weekend they beat El Nacional 2-0 away from home, they are third in Ecuador’s championship, four points behind leaders Delfin, but with two games in hand.
Melgar started their group campaign with an unexpected win over Emelec, but those three points were the only ones they managed to pick up in all five games. They have zero chances to finish in the top two. Last weekend they beat UTC Cajamarca 1-0 at home, in the first leg of the Torneo de Verano final. The second game between the two teams is being held the coming weekend. Center-back Carlos Ascues, left-back Nilson Loyola, central midfielder Hernan Hinostroza and attacking midfielder Jean Barrientos did not travel to Ecuador due to injury problems.
Emelec vs Melgar: Head-to-head Stats
Melgar beat Emelec 1-0 in Arequipa earlier this season, in what was the first game ever between these two.
Emelec vs Melgar: Prediction
Emelec are considered huge favorites to win the game, and for good reason. They have a much better team, they are playing at home, they need all three points to not care about what will be happening in Buenos Aires simultaneously, and they are hosting a team that have their attention mostly turned to the game they have the coming weekend, which will decide a title in Peru. The only… problem about Emelec, is that their win pays too-too little.
Emelec vs Melgar: Tips
A simple Emelec win is at just 1.20. They have scored in their last nine games, but they are by no means a spectacularly effective -offensively- team, so I’m hesitant to back them to win in an over 2.5 goals game. To almost double my money, I would go for a win of theirs combined with a clean sheet. This pays 1.90.
