Emelec vs San Lorenzo
Competition: Copa Libertadores
Date: 7 July 2017
Kick-off: 02:45 CET
Picking up just three points in five matches in Ecuador’s championship from June 13 to 28, Emelec were left with zero chances to win the title, so coach Alfredo Arias chose to rest practically all his regulars last weekend, when Emelec -ironically- finally won, 1-0, over River Ecuador. The Guayaquil side finished second in the group behind River Plate, one point above third-placed Medellin from Colombia. After losing several players in January and February (sold to teams abroad, following a good season), Emelec have every reason to be satisfied with how they did in the group stage, especially for their win at Medellin, on the penultimate day, a true final, where the ‘Eléctricos’ showed… metal of good team. Newly-signed Luis Fernando Luna arrived at Guayaquil on June 29, and two days later he got attacked and robbed, with his wife and kid present at the scene. After the attack, he publicly asked the robbers to return him some documents they took as they fled the scene.
San Lorenzo had mathematical chances to finish in Argentina championship’s top four until the last day of the season, a week ago, but they got held at 1-1 to Talleres Cordoba, so they finished 7th, a position good enough to earn them a ticket to next season’s Copa Sudamericana (not Libertadores). Huge news at San Lorenzo is that one of their most emblematic players, Nestor Ortigoza, is no longer a member of the team. His contract expired, and is now free to continue his career somewhere else. Once again, Uruguayan coach Diego Aguirre didn’t include Leandro Romagnoli in the list of players who traveled to Ecuador. For months now he has been showing how little he counts on one of San Lorenzo’s most important players these last eight years.
Emelec vs San Lorenzo: Head-to-head Stats
Emelec have played against six teams from Argentina in the past, but this is the first time they’re facing San Lorenzo.
Emelec vs San Lorenzo: Prediction
Emelec are considered favorites to win the game, but I’m backing the visitors not to lose.
Emelec vs San Lorenzo: Tips
‘Draw or San Lorenzo’ is at 1.61. Between the two, I consider a draw much more probable. It pays 3.10, or, even better, 3.60, if the game stays under 2.5 goals.
