England vs Scotland
Competition: Six Nations
Date: 11 March 2017
Kick-off: 17:00 CET
The Calcutta Cup has always been a fixture with a lot of pride behind it, but it has always been one that England have dominated regardless of time and place. However, this year the Scottish side are looking like a much bigger threat against an England side that has not really clicked well yet.
Although England have not clicked, they are still undefeated and a real threat. Coach Eddie Jones has instilled in them a desire to win at all costs and it is showing as even in poor showings against the likes of Wales and France, even Italy, they have still done enough to win the game. This England side has all the attributes to be world beaters but there is something missing from their game as they look a little out of it at times. It still has to be seen if they can do the Grand Slam twice in consecutive years, but there are stern tests left, and Scotland is one of them.
The Scots have finally made good on some promising aspects of their play over the last few years. They have always been a plucky side with a good attacking edge, but that attacking element has become even better with a hot backline. They have also solidified on defence and their forwards are well conditioned and bust. Against England they will also lift their game and hope to be able to take advantage of the stickiness that the England team find themselves in. If this game had been played at Murrayfield you would almost say that the Scots would be the favourites, but they still have a big shot at an upset.
England vs Scotland: Head-to-Head clashes
The Calcutta Cup has one of the longest histories in all of rugby history having been played on 134 occasion since 1879. In all those games however England have won 74 times and the Scots are rather decent 42 wins. However, there has been a real dominance by England in recent times with the Scots last winning in 2008, and the last time at Twickenham was in 1983.
England vs Scotland: Prediction
Again, if Scotland had the home advantage they could well win this game, but being at England’s fortress they will be a few points back before the ball is even kicked off. It will be a great game, and have a real test match feel as the team’s scrap for every point. England will win, but only just.
England vs Scotland: Tips
It will be a pragmatic approach by England, so bet on them to score less tries than the attacking Scots, but to win off penalties and mistakes by the opposition.
