Essex vs Surrey
Competition: NatWest T20 Blast
Date: 07 July 2017
Play starts: 20:00 CET
Surrey have been a long time force in the T20 competitions in England, but have been a little off the boil for a while now. They will however find it hard to face an Essex side that has always been towards the top of the pile.
Surrey were the inaugural winners of this competition back when it started in 2003, they were the runners up the following year, and made the semifinals the next two years. Unfortunately it has all gone downhill from then, and last year was not a great year for this proud club. To make matters worse, Surrey missed out at a chance of the knock outs by the smallest margin, and it was Essex they missed out to. Surrey finished with 14 points, and Essex with 15 – and a spot in the quarterfinals having lost one game less. This year Surrey will rely on some rather big names, none more so than Kevin Pietersen. There is also Kumar Sangakkara who has been breaking record with the amount of 100s he has scored in List A cricket. Add in Moisés Henriques and Jade Dernbach, and it looks a handy team.
Essex will know they were part of the reason for Surrey missing out, and that puts a target on their back. But they did make the quarterfinals fair and square despite being knocked out by Nottinghamshire when they posted a low score in the knockout game. There is a lot going on at Essex as they have not missed out on play offs for five years, but they have never made a final. They will hope that the likes of Simon Harmer from South Africa and Pakistan’s Mohammad Amir, as well as Neil Wagner and club captain Ryan ten Doeschate to inflict some damage in this the shortest form of the game.

Essex vs Surrey: Prediction
Surrey have done some good shopping and the man in form in all cricket is probably Kumar Sangakkara who cannot stop scoring runs. They have other to back him up so if these stars can shine, Essex will be in real strife. Essex have done well recently, and are on the up, but Surrey should have their number.
Essex vs Surrey: Tips
- Sangakkara to top score in the opening round.
- Harmer to take two wickets.
