FC Copenhagen vs Atletico Madrid
Competition: UEFA Europa League
Date: 15 February 2018
Kick-off: 21:05 CET
FC Copenhagen did their… duty in the group stage, picking up seven points from their three matches at home (including a draw against group winners and Russia Premier League leaders Lokomotiv Moscow), and two important draws on the road (at Zlin and Sheriff). In such a group, it would have been a failure not to finish second, they did, so… mission accomplished. Their… reward are two games against a club like Atletico Madrid, one we have gotten used to seeing in the Champions League, and not just in the group stage there, but in the semis and the finals. In their first official match in 2018, 10 days ago, they lost to Brondby in the Cup, it was a knock-out match, so one of their targets is already lost. They bounced back in the championship beating Randers, more like… destroying them, 5-1. They are sitting fourth in the table there, with good chances of finishing in the top-6, so as to take part in the “championship round” once the regular season is over.
Atletico Madrid players are not hiding the fact that they are not… thrilled with having to play in the Europa League. They all – publicly – agree that it’s their duty to try win the competition, but after spending years reaching the Champions League finals, semifinals, or at least quarterfinals, having to play in the last 32 of the Europa League feels almost like a… chore, a punishment. They have no one to blame but themselves, as they failed big in their Champions League group. At least they’re in decent form in LaLiga, having three wins in a row without conceding a single goal. Last weekend they saw their gap on Barcelona get somewhat shortened, to seven points, with 15 matches still to play. Third-placed Valencia (whom they beat 10 days ago), are nine points behind them, so the only ones who seem kind of able to challenge Barcelona for the LaLiga title are Atletico.

FC Copenhagen vs Atletico Madrid: Prediction
You don’t need to be a football expert to see that Atletico Madrid are the favourites here. Having the return leg in Madrid means that they can count on their home to… correct possible mistakes in this match, but no matter what, I do expect them to score and win (without conceding).
