Fluminense vs Atletico Paranaense
Competition: Brazilian Serie A
Date: 7 June 2017
Kick-off: 01:00 CET
Fluminense bounced back from their defeat at Vasco da Gama, they beat Vitoria 2-1 on Saturday, that’s one side of the coin. The other side is that they conceded, again, even though they were playing against possibly the weakest side of the Serie A (offensively). Their comfortable 2-0 advantage became 2-1 in the 66th minute, and they spent the rest of the game worrying that they could drop two points… out of nowhere. More bad news for Fluminense has to do with 20-year-old defensive midfielder Douglas Augusto. His arthritis problem seems to be super persistent, to the point of not letting him catch a break. Coach Abel Braga said after the game against Vitoria that he’s a big admirer of the player, and would definitely start him if available, but even he seemed unable to say how exactly the problem will be solved, throwing the… ball to the team’s doctors.
I expected Atletico Paranaense to lose at Coritiba and the game to have up to two goals. They did lose, 1-0. Truth is though, the game was very balanced, and maybe a draw would have been a more fair result. Attacking midfielder Nikao was substituted early in the second half, he didn’t like that at all, and made no effort to hide it. Coach Eduardo Baptista said after the game that the player was tired and he wanted to send in someone who would be able to run more, press more, but Nikao told the Press that he felt perfectly fine, and could have easily played on. Atletico have just one point in four matches, and it’s… time they shape up in the championship. They have qualified for the last 16 of the Copa Libertadores, they are alive and kicking in the Copa do Brasil, but one point in four Serie A matches is too-too-too little, not just for them, it would be the same for any team, but even more for them, given that they are not… Atletico Goianiense, they are Atletico Paranaense, they have the roster to be much higher than last.
Fluminense vs Atletico Paranaense: Head-to-head Stats
Atletico have earned two victories the last five times they visited Fluminense, one game ended in a draw, and twice it was the hosts who took all three points.
Fluminense vs Atletico Paranaense: Prediction
Taking a huge risk, I’m actually backing Atletico not to lose(!). It’s half because I don’t trust this Fluminense, and half because in their last three games Atletico have actually been more than just ‘above average’, and I feel it’s just a matter of time before they get their first win in the championship. In this specific game, I’m backing them to earn at least a draw, despite the fact that Fluminense are considered big-big favorites to win.
Fluminense vs Atletico Paranaense: Tips
‘Both teams to score’ pays 2.00, and I like it because even ‘non-existent’ offensively Vitoria managed to score against Fluminense. ‘Draw or Atletico’ is at 2.30.
