Fluminense vs Botafogo
Competition: Brazil Serie A
Date: 9 September 2018
Kick-off: 21:00 CET
Fluminense’s coach, Marcelo Oliveira, said after their goalless draw at home with Vitória that all they missed was a goal. I’m under the impression that Fluminense missed much more. It’s true they had the chances to score at least once and win the game, but it was very clear that without Pedro and Sornoza they are a very-very mediocre team. The Ecuadorian remains absent, on duty with his national team. As for Pedro, he remains unavailable as well, due to injury. Plus, latest news is, Flu rejected the two official offers they received for their young striker, from Bordeaux and Monterrey, and started negotiations with Real Madrid(!). They expect at least 20 million euros, or else they say they are determined to hold on to him, until the end of the season. They may be bluffing though, as their financial problems are not getting any smaller… They are on 28 points from 23 matches, sitting 12th in the table.
Botafogo’s financial troubles are no smaller than those of Fluminense. To give you an idea, CAIXA, their main sponsor, paid them 3.8 million reais midweek, and with that money they managed to pay the July salaries of players, coaches, and the rest of the club staff, even those working at the offices. I repeat, July’s salaries, not August’s. And, unlike Fluminense, Botafogo don’t have a… Pedro to sell. They do have some interesting players who could attract interest from clubs from abroad, but the money they’d get is nowhere near what Fluminense will, sooner or later, get for Pedro. On Wednesday, Botafogo drew 1-1 at home with Cruzeiro, taking the lead very early, but getting equalized before the end of the first half. They are on 26 points from 23 matches, right above the relegation line.

Fluminense vs Botafogo: Head to head Stats
Two wins for Flu, two for Botafogo as well, and a draw, in the last five Rio de Janeiro derbies between these two with Fluminense as hosts.
Fluminense vs Botafogo: Prediction
Fluminense are considered favorites to win the game, even slight ones. Personally, I don’t see it. Without Pedro and Sornoza, I don’t think they are that much better than Botafogo, if any better at all.
Fluminense vs Botafogo: Betting Tips
Botafogo’s double chance is at 1.53, low, but feeling very probable to me. Their win in “draw no bet” is at 2.10. “No” on “both teams to score” pays 1.75. Deep down I expect a goalless draw, or a 0-1 Botafogo win.
