Fluminense vs Universidad Catolica
Competition: Copa Sudamericana
Date: 30 June 2017
Kick-off: 02:45 CET
Fluminense finally managed to complete three consecutive games without losing, they drew 1-1 at Sao Paulo last weekend, and generally they have been showing signs of improvement the last ten days-two weeks. Flu made four changes in the list they sent to Conmebol, compared to the one they started the Copa Sudamericana this season. Mascarenhas, Marlon Freitas, Matheus Alessandro and Luquinhas are in, Osvaldo, Maranhão, Danielzinho and Luiz Fernando are out. Fluminense eliminated Liverpool in the previous round of the competition, they won 2-0 at home, and lost 1-0 in Uruguay. It’s interesting that in the Sudamericana, since 2003, Flu have nine wins at home, five draws, and no defeats.
Universidad Catolica are about to finish a poor season in Ecuador’s championship, hovering around the middle of the table. Last weekend they drew 1-1 to El Nacional, their fourth point in two games, after five consecutive defeats. They were definitely impressive against Petrolero Yacuiba in the previous round of the Copa Sudamericana though, winning 3-1 in Bolivia, and 3-0 in Quito, leaving no doubt over which the best team were, and who deserved to continue in the competition. Catolica have been playing in the Sudamericana every year since 2014, but this is the first time exactly after 2014 that they managed to go through the first round, which is a success of its own for this modest Ecuadorian club.
Fluminense vs Universidad Catolica: Head-to-head Stats
Fluminense and Universidad Catolica have never faced each other before.
Fluminense vs Universidad Catolica: Prediction
The only thing that can hurt Fluminense in this game, is their own attitude. If they look serious and focused, they will win, and rather easily. If they start the game thinking that their heavy jersey will win the game for them, they could get in trouble. Quito is not the easiest city to visit on a return leg, if you’re not used to the altitude of the Ecuadorian capital city.
Fluminense vs Universidad Catolica: Tips
Fluminense’s win pays just 1.30. For something much better than that, a Flu win combined with a clean sheet looks worth the risk. The Rio de Janeiro side have looked much better defensively in their last two Brasileirao games, and either way, Catolica are nowhere close to the level of even the weakest Serie A teams.
