Freiburg vs Mainz
Competition: Germany Bundesliga
Date: 17 August 2019
Kick-off: 15:30 CET
Freiburg didn’t really worry about getting relegated last season, earning, mostly at home, the points they needed to consistently stay away from trouble. Last weekend they played their first official match of the season, at Magdeburg, and needed an added-time goal to win (0-1) and qualify for the next DFB Pokal round. These last weeks were rather… stressful for Christian Streich, their coach, as he saw one after another his strikers and wingers deal with all sorts of injury problems. Some haven’t recovered yet, others have recovered but are struggling with fitness, so things could definitely be much better at Freiburg before their debut in the Bundesliga. Flekken, Haberer, Kwon, Kübler and Terrazzino are recovering from injuries, while Itter was considered doubtful the day before the game. Freiburg should start with Schwolow, Schmid, Lienhart, Heintz, Günter, Borrello, Frantz, Höfler, Jeong, Petersen and Waldschmidt.
Mainz have to start their Bundesliga campaign without French striker Jean-Philippe Mateta. He is recovering from injury, and it’s still unclear when exactly he’ll be back. To make matters worse, Mainz got eliminated super early in the DFB Pokal, losing at Kaiserslautern last weekend, 2-0. Mateta is not the only player missing; Bell, Ji, Mwene and Seydel are also out, four more guys recovering from injuries. Plus, Meier was considered doubtful the day before this game. Sandro Schwarz is expected to have Müller, Brosinski, St. Juste, Niakhate, Martin, Baku, Fernandes, Latza, Boetius, Onisiwo and Quaison in the starting lineup. Mainz finished 12th last season, after a rather mediocre campaign in the Bundesliga. At least they didn’t worry about getting relegated, but that was pretty much the only positive.

Freiburg vs Mainz: Head to head Stats
Two wins for the hosts and three for Mainz in the last five games between these two in Freiburg.
Freiburg vs Mainz: Prediction
The hosts are considered favorites to win. They did do well at home last season. Both teams are missing a good number of key players. All things considered, I would leave winners and losers aside, and bet on goals.
Freiburg vs Mainz: Betting Tips
“Under 2.5 goals” is at 1.87. For more than that, I would combine it with Freiburg’s double chance (not win), at 2.40.
