Frolunda Gothenburg vs Eisbaren Berlin
Competition: Champions Hockey League
Date: 8th November 2016
Kick-off: 20:00 CET
To say Frolunda were better than Berlin last week would be an understatement – they simply dominated their DEL opponents for 60 minutes in the German capital, and running out 6-1 winners has them with one foot in the next round already.
Frolunda were always going to be a tough ask for Berlin, with the Indians in really good form in the SHL too. With five wins in their last six in all competitions, and only three losses now in 11 games in all competitions, Frolunda have found their way to win and are almost unstoppable when they do – especially against teams from outside their own league.
The Eisbaren just didn’t know how to handle Frolunda’s fast-moving game last week, and had also been a bit hot and cold in their domestic form as well. It’s now three losses in four for the Polar Bears in all competitions.
Frolunda have lost just one game in eight at home in the SHL so far this season. In the CHL, they needed a home win over Minsk to make it through, although they did lose at home to Wolfsburg in the group stage 3-2 – however they were already through, and the Grizzlys had to win to make it to the next round. Averaging four a goals a game scored, and less than two against, they’re formidable on their own ice in the CHL.
The Eisbaren have lost four straight DEL matches going into this CHL game that they have to win by five just to force overtime. They did hit five in Lulea earlier this season, although the gap between then and Frolunda in the SHL this season is big. Averaging 3,3 goals for and 3 against so far in the CHL though suggests they won’t get a big enough margin to worry the Indians.
Frolunda Gothenburg vs Eisbaren Berlin: Head-to-Head
Last week’s win for Frolunda was their second in three against Berlin – the other being a European Trophy game back in 2011 which they won 6-0. Berlin did get revenge two years later with a 4-3 victory.
Frolunda Gothenburg vs Eisbaren Berlin: Prediction
It’s almost inconceivable that Frolunda won’t make it to the next round, so given how comfortable their position is there’s a slim chance Berlin could win the game but not by nearly enough. Frolunda still favourites though by a margin.
