Gent vs Tottenham
Competition: Europa League
Date: 16 February 2017
Kick-off: 19:00 CET
There is no polite way of saying it, but Spurs’ Champions League performances this year were poor, especially after they did so well domestically, right in the race all the way to the end. Now, they have fallen down into the Europa League, and seeing as they are again in the Premier League race, you have to wonder how much this will mean to them when they face Gent.
In saying that, Gent will be relishing facing a team like Tottenham, as it is a major English side gracing their home ground in Belgium. Gent however will need to raise their game as they finished second in their group in the first stages of the Europa League, and that was a far off second place as Shakhtar Donetsk were almost unchallenged for first spot in Group H. Gent put in a mediocre performance at best, they won two, drew two and then lost two games, so when they face Spurs, they will need to fix up their defence more than anything as they conceded the most goals in their group, despite coming second.
For Spurs, they would have fancied their chances in their Champions League group as the opposition were not all that fearsome. However, they still ended up in third behind Monaco and Bayer Leverkusen. Wins were hard to come by, and goals even more so, but things have changed and Spurs are back to their bet as they challenge the top of the Premier League. What remains to be seen is whether the coach will deem this game as important, as even when their chances were starting to wain in the Champion’s League, the Spurs boss starting saving his players to perform better in the Premier League.
Gent vs Tottenham: Group stage form
Spurs will be the favourite for this encounter, for although they finished third in their group it was still relatively close. They were one win away from qualifying, finishing with seven points from two wins and a draw, but they only scored six goals, and concede the same amount.
Gent came in second, but with eight points, as Donetsk come in first with 18 points. They drew, won and lost two each, but they conceded 13 goals and only scored nine.
Gent vs Tottenham: Prediction
This could be an upset, the feeling is that Spurs’ are putting all their eggs into the Premier League and if they prioritised the league over the Champions League, you can imagine the same for this game. Gent could come away with a good home win, or the very least, a draw.
Gent vs Tottenham: Tips
Bet on a home win, it will be against the grain as many will think Tottenham will have this game, but they won’t care if they win or lose.
