Godoy Cruz vs Olimpia
Competition: Copa Libertadores
Date: 5 March 2019
Kick-off: 23:15 CET
Godoy Cruz have a new coach. It’s Lucas Bernardi, a guy who has worked at El Tomba before, with great results. They announced their agreement with him right before kickoff at San Martín San Juan last weekend, a game in which they drew without goals. Godoy Cruz are just 14th in Argentina’s championship, looking nothing like the team that finished second(!) last year. Then again, because of Argentina’s calendar, there is a huge time gap between the moment their championship ends, and the Copa Libertadores group stage starts, risking having “here” (in the Libertadores group stage) teams that look totally different to what they looked months and months (and months and months) earlier. It will be very interesting to see how Bernardi’s arrival will affect the players.
Olimpia seem to have picked up where they left off at the end of last season. They were by far the best team in Paraguay last year, winning both the Apertura and the Clausura. They returned to action this season looking similarly… dominant. In eight matches in this year’s Apertura, they have eight wins and just one draw (no defeat), and the draw was against huge city rivals Cerro Porteño, with Cerro equalizing in added time. Last year, they got eliminated very early, losing to Junior (Barranquilla, Colombia) in the second qualifying round. Winning the Apertura meant they didn’t have to worry about qualifiers this season, they were guaranteed a spot in the Libertadores group stage, where, either way, they belong, historically.

Godoy Cruz vs Olimpia: Head to head Stats
Godoy Cruz and Olimpia have never played against each other before.
Godoy Cruz vs Olimpia: Prediction
Godoy Cruz may be going through a rough patch, generally their season may not have been particularly good, but I still expect them to… figure things out against Olimpia, who, yes, may be doing great in Paraguay, but competition there, every weekend, is nothing like what Godoy Cruz have to face in Argentina. Plus, I take seriously the presence of a new coach at the Mendoza side.
Godoy Cruz vs Olimpia: Betting Tips
Godoy Cruz’s win is at 2.70, risky, but I like it. Their double chance combined with “over 1.5” pays 2.05, a more reserved approach.
