Godoy Cruz vs River Plate
Competition: Argentina Superliga
Date: 31 January 2019
Kick-off: 01:00 CET
Godoy Cruz started well against Lanús last weekend, came close to opening the scoring, but around the 25th minute they sort of… switched off. Lanús started ruling on the pitch, Godoy Cruz conceded twice, and could have conceded more goals. They did fight back in the second half, but not the way you would expect a home team to do, not in a particularly intense and convincing way. The score didn’t change, the Mendoza side started 2019 off on the wrong foot, but at least they remained 8th in the table, on 23 points. They have one match in hand, this one against River. If they win, they will climb up 6th, at least for 24 hours, before Boca Juniors play. On Monday, El Tomba signed 22-year-old central midfielder Facundo Barboza from Argentinos Juniors, on loan.
This feels like a… bad joke. River Plate played three home matches the last 10 days, given whom they faced they should have earned at least seven points, but… incredibly, they are still on the same 19 points they had at the end of 2018. Three defeats, the last one this past weekend, to Patronato, 1-3. Truth is, they played with several reserves, because coach Marcelo Gallardo felt he needed to… shake things up a bit, breath new life into his team. Absolutely nothing worked for River, who created their first “sort of” chance to score after going 0-3 down(!). Defensively, they were… nowhere to be seen. It felt like they had approached the match as a friendly one, in the middle of pre-season. Unacceptable. By the time the game starts, River must have completed the signing of 20-year-old attacking midfielder Jorge Carrascal. Back home they call him “Colombian Neymar”.

Godoy Cruz vs River Plate: Prediction
I risk eating my own words, but I really expect River to draw a line, say a silent “enough is enough”, and finally get their first positive result this month.
