Gremio vs Athletico Paranaense
Competition: Copa do Brasil
Date: 15 August 2019
Kick-off: 02:30 CET
Even Gremio’s biggest fan would have to admit that this season his team are not playing the “pleasing to the eye” football they played the previous three years. Even so, the Porto Alegre side are in the Copa do Brasil semifinals, the Copa Libertadores quarterfinals, and earlier this year they won their State championship as well. Last weekend they lost 3-1 at Flamengo, a game that left them complaining to the referee for… half a dozen decisions of his. Renato Gaúcho is expected to have Paulo Victor, Leonardo, Geromel, Kannemann, Cortez, Matheus Henrique, Maicon, Alisson, Jean Pyerre, Everton and André (or Diego Tardelli) in the starting lineup. According to reports, Gaúcho’s only dilemma has to do with the man up front, whether he’ll have André as lone striker, or veteran Diego Tardelli. Luan, a key figure in Gremio these last years, somehow has turned into a reserve in 2019.
Tiago Nunes knew Renan Lodi would be impossible to substitute, but there was no way to keep him at Athletico Paranaense when Atlético Madrid went knocking on their door. On top of that, the Curitiba side have 3-4 players who excelled last season, not at the same level in 2019. Unlike Gremio, they got eliminated in Copa Libertadores, to Boca Juniors. Santos, Jonathan, Lucas Halter, Léo Pereira, Márcio Azevedo, Wellington, Bruno Guimarães, Nikão (or Bruno Nazário), Marcelo Cirino, Rony and Marco Ruben, these should be their first 11. Last weekend they lost 2-1 at Botafogo, despite taking the lead early in the game.

Gremio vs Athletico Paranaense: Head to head Stats
Two wins for Gremio, one for Athletico, and two draws, in the last five games between these two in Porto Alegre.
Gremio vs Athletico Paranaense: Prediction
I like Gremio’s chances of winning the game. Despite sitting lower than Athletico in the Serie A table, I consider them a better team (when they play with their regulars, their best possible lineup, which they tend to do almost exclusively in Copa do Brasil and Copa Libertadores games).
