Gremio vs Corinthians
Competition: Brazilian Serie A
Date: 25 June 2017
Kick-off: 21:00 CET
Gremio made a potentially very difficult game look rather easy, they scored early on against Coritiba, protected their lead until the last minutes, and then finished the match off with a second goal. They remain second, and they are hosting the leaders who are just one point above them, so… it doesn’t get much better than this as far as ‘opportunities to climb first’ go. Right winger Ramiro missed the game versus Coritiba due to suspension but he’s back. Center-back Walter Kannemann is facing a problem and is doubtful. Attacking midfielder Miler Bolanos and left-back Marcelo Oliveira are definitely out, still trying to shake off their latest injuries. Should be noted that Gremio are hosting Atletico Paranaense on Wednesday, first leg of a Copa do Brasil quarterfinal.
I backed Corinthians to beat Bahia and the game to have at least three goals. The Sao Paulo side won 3-0, paying the 2.62 this came with. It was important for Corinthians to bounce back after their 0-0 at Coritiba, and they did, in style. Coming Wednesday, same time other Brazilian teams will be fighting each other in the Copa do Brasil, Corinthians will be playing in Colombia, at Patriotas Boyaca, in a Copa Sudamericana round of 32 first leg. It’s not nearly as glamorous as the Copa Libertadores, but Corinthians do care. Enough for coach Fabio Carille to rotate his team extensively? No. Judging by what he showed in training these last days, he will play with his best possible 11. Defensive midfielder Gabriel will be missing though, since he got sent off the other day against Bahia.
Gremio vs Corinthians: Head-to-head Stats
Gremio have four wins and one draw in their last five home games against Corinthians. The draw was a Copa do Brasil match in 2013, and even then, Gremio won on penalties.
Gremio vs Corinthians: Prediction
Derby, second against first, two best teams of the championship in the first nine game weeks, Gremio have -by far- the best offense so far, have scored 23 goals, Corinthians on the other hand have the best defense, have conceded just five goals, so… it couldn’t be any trickier, especially if you take into consideration the games both of them have midweek. Everything considered, I’m backing Corinthians not to lose.
Gremio vs Corinthians: Tips
‘Draw or Corinthians’ is at 1.90. The Sao Paulo side remain unbeaten, the last one in this Serie A campaign, and I expect them to still have this title after the game in Porto Alegre. It’s not too much, this 1.90, but the parameters of this game are so many and so complicated that I’m super hesitant to suggest anything else.
