Guangzhou Evergrande vs Buriram United
Competition: AFC Champions League
Date: 14 February 2018
Kick-off: 10:00 CET
Guangzhou Evergrande haven’t played an official game since November 4. They did play several friendly matches these last weeks, but their results against… lowly European teams were anything from poor to embarrassing. They won the championship last season in China, leaving Shanghai SIPG second. Ironically, it was the same team that eliminated them from the AFC Champions League in the quarterfinals, in two matches that will be remembered for… generations. Shanghai SIPG triumphed 4-0 at home in the first leg, making the return one looking like a… typical procedure. Somehow, Guangzhou Evergrande won 4-0 back home, scoring their last two goals in the dying minutes of the match. In extra time, the away goal rule no longer applied, so the game went to penalties with the score at 5-1, and Shanghai SIPG playing with nine men(!). Guangzhou failed in the penalties, getting eliminated despite winning the game 5-1.
Thai champions Buriram United are back to the AFC Champions League after missing out on last season’s edition. This is their 7th appearance. Back in 2016 all they managed was a point from six group matches. The new championship season in Thailand started last weekend, and Buriram United already picked up their first three points, beating Ratchaburi 2-1 at home. Brazilian attacker Diogo scored their second goal, a guy who moved to Thailand three years ago after playing in his native Brazil and also in Greece, and has turned into an… icon at Buriram United. His numbers are impressive. He scores a goal per game in Thailand’s championship, obviously not against the strongest teams on the planet, but still, a goal per game is… more than impressive, it’s a… “legend-level” achievement.

Guangzhou Evergrande vs Buriram United: Prediction
Tricky, because Guangzhou Evergrande looked really poor in their January friendly games, and haven’t played an official match in months. Even so, they should find the way to win this one.
Guangzhou Evergrande vs Buriram United: Betting Tips
At 1.22, I’m leaving Guangzhou’s win aside. Seeing how vulnerable they looked in their friendly games, I choose “both teams to score” as my only tip. It pays 2.10, and another reason I like it is because Buriram are a… naturally gifted, offensively, team, so I can see them scoring in China.
