Huddersfield Giants vs Salford Red Devils
Competition: English Super League
Date: Thursday 16th February, 2017
Venue: The John Smith’s Stadium, Huddersfield
Kickoff: 21:00 CET
Huddersfield head into this split-round match as heavy favourites following the opening round of the Super League, after recording a solid win against Widnes, also at home. Salford, conversely, were paltry in their opening half of the season, only to bounce back and win the 2nd half against a powerhouse Wigan outfit.
Thus, the Red Devils will be looking to carry on their 2nd half form, which produced 3 tries, and held Wigan scoreless for the full 40 minutes. If they can do this, they will be a very good chance of knocking off Huddersfield, who similarly to Wigan fell away in the latter stages of the match, after recording a comfortable lead.
Cool clear conditions await the players with a game-time temperature of around 6 degrees predicted, allowing expansive gameplans. The Giants showed a new style with several of their key offseason signings performing very well in their first game, and will look to build on this, with the likes of Gaskell, and Ferguson featuring, as well as Tom Symonds, the former Manly and Roosters backrower.
Huddersfield Giants vs Salford Red Devils: Head to Head Stats
Since April of 2014 these teams have met 5 times and only once did Huddersfield take the points, with a 1-point thriller back in August of last season. On 2 of the other 4 occasions, the Red Devils thrashed Huddersfield, by a margin of 20+ points, while in the other 2 they scraped wins.
Back in 2014 though, Huddersfield had a field-day against the Devils winning 42-22, leaving no clear patterns in recent clashes between these 2 teams, who both missed out on the generous post-season of 8 of 12 teams last year. Huddersfield does have recent match-form though, with 5 wins from their last 6 matches, while Salford are a mediocre 3 from 6.
Huddersfield Giants vs Salford Red Devils: Prediction
If Salford can continue their form from the 2nd half against Wigan they are a very good chance of providing their fans with a win. There certainly seems as though room for improvement is going to be natural in the Salford outfit, with Todd Carney not playing in Round 1, and their forward pack performing strongly. Huddersfield, had plenty of positives from their first half of the year, particularly with new-comers Ferguson and Hinchcliffe performing admirably.
The home ground advantage cannot be overlooked for the Giants and they will look to give their supporters the dream start to the season, and perch themselves atop the ladder with a win in this split-round fixture. Overall, a tricky one to predict this early in the season, with many new parts to both clubs’ rosters.
Huddersfield Giants vs Salford Red Devils: Tips
