Independiente del Valle vs Banfield
Competition: Copa Libertadores
Date: 7 February 2018
Kick-off: 01:30 CET
Draw (3.70) and Independiente’s double chance (2.25) were my tips last week when the Sangolquí side visited Banfield, and both came good, as the Ecuadorians earned a draw with goals, 1-1, putting them in the driver’s seat in this tie. Both goals came from the penalty spot, with Banfield taking the lead in the 71st minute, and Independiente equalising in added time. The hosts will be without defender Fernando León, who got sent off in the dying seconds of the first leg in Argentina. He is one of their best – and most promising – players, and his absence is definitely a problem for Gabriel Schurrer. The Argentine coach had a full week to prepare his team for this game, as Independiente didn’t have a match last weekend. Keep in mind, the game is held in Quito, a very short bus ride from Sangolquí. Independiente’s stadium doesn’t comply with CONMEBOL regulations.
The way the first leg went, Banfield missed an awesome opportunity to win the game, even by the slightest of margins. They took the lead from the penalty spot in the 71st minute, but got… punished the same way in added time, when Independiente del Valle made it 1-1 again from the penalty spot. Banfield had a player sent off as well, just like their opponents, during added time. Right-back Gonzalo Bettini is obviously unavailable. An interesting detail about Banfield is that they traveled to Ecuador without their coach. Julio César Falcioni had to undergo a surgery recently, and is recovering back home. Banfield drew 0-0 last weekend at home against Independiente (Avellaneda, one of Argentina’s greats), a game in which not a single player was used, from those who started the first leg against Independiente del Valle last week.

Last week’s game was the first ever between these two.
Independiente del Valle vs Banfield: Prediction
Quito’s altitude is something you always need to take into consideration when a team from another country plays there, but… despite that detail, and despite the fact that Independiente del Valle are considered major favourites to win the game (not just qualify, but win the game as well), I’m actually backing the underdogs, Banfield, to earn at least a draw.
Independiente del Valle vs Banfield: Betting Tips
Banfield’s double chance is at 2.30 betting odds, way higher than the hosts’ win at 1.61. Why I trust Banfield not to lose? Because I like their roster, the combination of experienced and younger players, and last week they showed… more than Independiente del Valle, they seemed better prepared, despite the not positive result.
