Independiente vs Libertad
Competition: Copa Sudamericana
Date: 29 November 2017
Kick-off: 01:15 CET
It’s hard to believe that Independiente lost the game in Asuncion last week… They conceded the only goal of the match less than 60 seconds after kick-off, a goal though that should have been disallowed, since Oscar Cardozo used his hand to receive the ball and lay it down in front of him, before executing – brilliantly – with his left foot. That was Libertad’s first and last chance to score in the match, they took it, while Independiente had seven-eight great chances to score at least once, but missed them all. The only positive that came out of that match for the Avellaneda side was that Libertad’s scorer got sent off in the 74th minute for elbowing an Independiente player. Last weekend, the Argentine side beat Racing Club 1-0 away from home, meaning… a few hundred meters away, in Avellaneda’s huge derby. They are sitting sixth in the table of Argentina’s Superliga, six points behind leaders Boca Juniors.
If only Cardozo hadn’t acted so carelessly in the 74th minute… The scorer of last week’s first leg in Asuncion cannot play in Avellaneda, leaving Libertad without their most experienced player, the guy who could influence the outcome of the return leg possibly more than any other Libertad player. To make it to the final, the Paraguayan side need to repeat the performance (and result) of the quarterfinal they played a few weeks ago, a few hundred meters away from Independiente’s stadium. In the previous round, Libertad had beaten Racing Club 1-0 at home in the first leg, and managed a goalless draw away, a week later. Independiente though, are not Racing, they have already proved that, by the way they played last week, being dominant, despite losing 1-0. Plus, I repeat, Libertad will be without Cardozo, after his… indescribably irresponsible behavior in that 74th minute case, when he elbowed an opponent off the field. Last weekend, Libertad drew 0-0 to Deportivo Capiata at home, and are now just 7th in Paraguay’s Clausura, just two game weeks before the end of the season.
