Istanbul Basaksehir vs Olympiacos Piraeus
Competition: UEFA Champions League
Date: 6 August 2019
Kick-off: 19:45 CET
What a campaign Istanbul Basaksehir had in Turkey’s championship last season… They ended up second, just two points behind champions Galatasaray, but above Besiktas, and this is how they earned this Champions League qualifiers ticket. They have a new coach; Okan Buruk took over soon after the end of last season. The new championship in Turkey hasn’t started yet, so this will be his official debut on Basaksehir’s bench. They have several famous players in their roster, but one everyone knows not just in Europe but in the whole world is Robinho. The Brazilian may be 35 and not at the level he used to be at other clubs, earlier in his career, but he remains… Robinho. The Turkish side spent big money to strengthen their squad even further this summer.
Olympiacos would prefer facing some other team in the third qualifying round, not Istanbul Basaksehir, but on Monday they received even… worse news; whoever qualifies from this tie, will play against either Krasnodar or Porto in the playoffs. Portuguese Pedro Martins remains in charge, despite the fact that the Piraeus side failed to win any title in Greece last year. They finished second in the championship, not really threatening PAOK, and saw the same team win the Cup as well. Somehow, the president appreciated Martins’ job, and decided to keep him, which is highly unusual by Olympiacos standards (to give any coach a second chance). In the second qualifying round they eliminated Viktoria Plzen, drawing 0-0 in Czechia in the first leg, and then triumphing 4-0 in Greece.

The hosts are considered favorites to win, something I agree with, partly because I don’t trust Olympiacos away from home.
