Jeju United vs Buriram United
Competition: AFC Champions League
Date: 17 April 2018
Kick-off: 13:00 CET
Game over for Jeju United, after their 2-1 defeat at Cerezo Osaka two weeks ago. On three points from five matches, they simply can’t “catch” second-placed Cerezo. Interestingly, those three points were earned in Thailand, against Buriram United, thanks to a “clear” 2-0 win. In three K-League matches after that painful defeat in Osaka, they picked up seven points, including three last weekend, thanks to a resounding 4-2 home win over Incheon United. They are fourth in the table, on 11 points from seven matches. Jeju had two goals in six matches before their last two triumphs in the K-League, two games in which they scored a total of seven goals(!), yes, the same team that had two in six.
Yoo Jun-Su’s added-time goal two weeks ago in Buriram United’s home game against Guangzhou Evergrande was of… pure gold. It salvaged a point for the Thai team, keeping them alive in the fight for a top 2 spot. A minute earlier, Goulart had missed an… impossible to describe in words chance to make it 0-2. Buriram are on six points, two less than Cerezo Osaka and three less than Guangzhou Evergrande. First things first, they absolutely MUST beat Jeju United to have any hope of finishing in the top 2. Preferably, they should win by as many goals as possible, but that’s rather too much to ask. If Guangzhou beat Cerezo in China and Buriram win their game, the Thais are in the last 16. If the game in China ends in a draw and Buriram win, they finish second, and Cerezo are left third, because Buriram have four points from their two games against the Japanese. Last, if Cerezo win and Buriram win as well, it will come down to goals. Both games between Evergrande and Buriram ended in a 1-1 draw. As things stand right now, Guangzhou are on +4 (9-5), in all group matches, and Buriram at… zero (6-6). For example, if Buriram win 0-1, they go to +1 (7-6). If Guangzhou lose 1-0, they will go to +3 (9-6). I repeat, it will come down to goals, depending on how big Buriram’s win is, and how big Guangzhou’s defeat will be.
