Johanna Larsson vs Natalia Vikhlyantseva: Preview
Vikhlyantseva has made the step into top 100 this season after some decent results in the first weeks of the year. She managed to get through the qualifiers in Melbourne and even win her first round match against Vania King, before losing to Pavlyuchenkova. The semifinal in St. Petersburg is the result that really put her on the map after impressive wins against Shvedova and Kasatkina. She even managed a decent run in Prague from qualifiers losing a hard fought match against Siniakova in second round. But besides these there were mostly defeats for the russian. Some see her as a future good player but she’s already 20 years old and she barely now scratched the surface in terms of rankings. I have seen her several times so far and she has a big game composed of a powerful serve and a forehand capable of sending winners from every corner of the court. Her problem is the menthal component. Once her serve fails or she has a few bad shots her whole game decomposes just like that. The fact that we’re barely now hearing about her on the big stage despite her amazing physical abilities just proves the fact that she still has a long way to go before actually competing against the pros. In layman’s terms the hardware is good, the software needs improvement. Whether she will get there or not remains to be seen.
Larsson is a decent experienced clay courter but she remains constantly in the top 100 by playing reasonably well on all surfaces except maybe grass. She has a lot of points to defend after the grass season and seeing that she hasn’t done much so far this season apart from a semifinal in Bogota, I believe she is eyeing the French Open for a decent run, at least till the level of her opponents allows her.

Johanna Larsson vs Natalia Vikhlyantseva: Prediction
Vikhlyantseva is clearly the underdog on clay against Larsson. Her only chance would be to serve perfect and shoot winner after winner with very chance she gets. Even if the russian does manage to do that for a little while at the start of the match I expect her game to fall apart eventually and the swede to take this, maybe even in two sets.
