Junior vs Boca Juniors
Competition: Copa Libertadores
Date: 3 May 2018
Kick-off: 00:15 CET
Fatigue. That’s the key word looking at Junior’s situation. Last weekend they hosted Alianza Petrolera, with 10 of their 11 starters having played against Alianza Lima a couple of days earlier. Junior were desperate to win, but a goalless draw was all they managed. They are 8th in the table of Colombia’s championship, with one game left, and be reminded, only the top 8 teams will continue in the final stages, to fight for the title. In their Libertadores group they are second, one point ahead of Boca Juniors. A win sends them to the last 16 of the competition, a draw sort of… buys them time. On the last day, they are visiting Palmeiras, while Boca will be hosting Alianza Lima.
Ironic… As previously mentioned, Junior have played a crazy number of games these last 10 days. Boca Juniors had their game at Gimnasia La Plata postponed last weekend, because of a torrential rain that made playing football impossible. They are well-rested, visiting a team that looked exhausted last weekend. A draw will leave Boca second, but with major chances of qualifying. A simple win over lowly Alianza Lima in Buenos Aires should be enough, as it’s hard to imagine Junior beating Palmeiras in Brazil, even if Palmeiras will have already qualified. Boca have won just one of their last five games, with their coach repeating that his players were tired because of the back-to-back games. This is Boca’s golden opportunity to earn a major advantage in the race for a top 2 spot, playing against a team that are infinitely more tired than them.
