Junior vs Palmeiras
Competition: Copa Libertadores
Date: 7 March 2019
Kick-off: 01:30 CET
Junior didn’t have to go through playoffs to reach the Copa Libertadores group stage, having won the “Torneo Finalización 2018” in Colombia, the second half of the season. Last year they eliminated Olimpia and Guaraní, both Asunción sides, to reach the group stage, and finished third there, continuing in the Copa Sudamericana, where they reached the final. On Saturday they beat Once Caldas 0-1, in Manizales, climbing up second in the table. They are on 18 points from eight matches, a single point behind leaders Millonarios. They remain undefeated in their championship, but failed to win any of their last two home games, against Rionegro (1-1) and Envigado (0-0).
On July 25, last year, Palmeiras lost 1-0 to Fluminense in Rio de Janeiro. Right after that game, coach Róger Machado was fired, and Luiz Felipe Scolari was brought in. More than half the season was left, 23 matches to play. Palmeiras stayed undefeated(!), winning 17 games, drawing in six, winning the title as deservedly as any team can win any title. They got eliminated by Boca Juniors in the Copa Libertadores, by Cruzeiro in the Copa do Brasil, but nothing spoiled the party for them, as they went on to be crowned “best team in the country”, winning the championship title. Scolari remains in charge, and it looks like he has at his disposal a roster that is better than last year. Ricardo Goulart is back to Brazil after a very successful passage from China, and has already shown that Palmeiras can count on him to score goals. Last Wednesday they played against Ituano in their State championship, and won 3-2, with Goulart scoring twice, and Colombian Miguel Borja also adding his name on the scoresheet.
