Khimki Moscow vs CSKA Moscow
Competition: Turkish Airlines Euroleague
Date: 23 March 2018
Time: 18:00 CET
Khimki Moscow almost suffered an upset when they visited Turkey on Wednesday, but they eventually managed to escape with a win against Anadolu Efes. They saw their opponents take an eleven point lead at the end of the first quarter, but Khimki Moscow reacted perfectly. They slowly started to eat into the deficit, and after severely outscoring their opponents in the next three quarters, they won by 73:85. Thomas was excellent with 17 points, 3 assists and 5 rebounds, Shved was also very good with 16 points, 8 assists, 3 rebounds and 3 steals, but also Vialtsev (13p), Gill (11p) and Jenkins (10p) contributed towards the win. Khimki Moscow clinched their spot in the playoffs with that win, as they are now sitting at the 7th spot of the Euroleague (W16 L11). They will now battle for a better placement, in order to avoid being matched with the top teams of the Euroleague. However, they will have a couple of injury concerns in this match, as Honeycutt, Sokolov and Zubkov are currently listed as doubtful to participate.
On the other hand, CSKA Moscow also saw their opponents take a three point lead at the end of the first quarter on Wednesday, but they also overturned the lead in their favor to defeat Olympiacos Piraeus by 89:81 at home. The Russians were great in the second quarter (21:14), and managed to hold on to their lead till the end of the match. De Colo exploded for 25 points, 4 assist, 5 rebounds and 4/4 triples, while Higgins (14p), Rodriguez (13p) and Clyburn (12p) also chipped in some valuable points. CSKA Moscow are one win away from mathematically securing the top spot of the Euroleague, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they rested some of their key players in the coming matches. They are of course still sitting at the top of the Euroleague (W22 L5), scoring a massive 89.62 points per match, while allowing 79.18 in the process. They will be making this trip without Kulagin and Korobkov who are injured.
