Kolner Haie vs Krefeld Pinguine
Competition: German DEL
Date: 22th November 2016
Kick-off: 19:30 CET
Kolner Haie host the Penguins of Krefeld midweek in the German top flight, with both teams coming off defeats on Sunday. Their overall league positions however are very different.
The Sharks have been almost consistently in the league’s top three for most of the season so far, having slipped to third over the weekend with that loss to rivals Dusseldorf. That’s not two defeats in four for the Kolner side, who are .500 in their last 10 games – the ‘tradition’ of late however is two wins for every loss. What’s possibly a bit worrying for the Sharks is that they’ve won recent games against teams around them, but then lost to sides lower down the standings. Their season record so far stands at 12-0-0-6 in 18 matches.
Krefeld on the other hand have been floating around the lower reaches of the table for most of the season, periodically going into the ‘pity-playoff’ positions from 7-10 and then falling out again. The Penguins have lost their last two games, and six of the last seven overall after a little bit of good form in the middle of last month. They have 22 points from 20 games and a 5-1-5-9 record until now.
Kolner are the best home team in the league so far with 21 points from 11 games, including seven regulation wins. They were on a streak of three straight losses in their own building, but two wins by a combined score of 8-1 in their last pair of home matches put an end to that. On their own ice, the Sharks average over 3 goals a game, while letting in 2.
Krefeld are actually a top five road side in the league, with their awful home form holding them back from being higher up. They’ve won four of their 10 road matches in regulation and one after OT, with the identical opposite record of 4 regulation losses and one in OT. The team lost in Munich on Friday, but won five of their last seven away games. On the road, the Penguins score an average of 3,4 goals a game while giving up 3,1.
