Lamia vs Panathinaikos
Competition: Greece Super League
Date: 21 January 2019
Kick-off: 18:00 CET
Lamia visited Aris last weekend, lost 1-0 conceding in added time, and soon after the final whistle it was Aris’ coach who admitted that his team didn’t deserve to win. Lamia were left feeling they deserved a point, but they have no one to blame but themselves for not doing better defensively in added time. They were and remained 14th in the table, on just 11 points from 15 matches. Defender Giannis Skondras is out due to cards. Be reminded, Lamia beat Panathinaikos at home 10 days ago, 1-0, in the Cup, and are visiting them in a few days for the return leg. The Cup is not Lamia’s main target this season, but they obviously want to… make headlines, eliminate a historic club, reach the quarterfinals, and why not, keep dreaming of a… miracle.
Pity for Panathinaikos, who played a fantastic second half last weekend, at home, against Xanthi, managed to go 2-1 up from 0-1 down, but a naive mistake by one of their many young players in added time, cost them. Penalty, goal for Xanthi, 2-2 in the 6th minute of added time, two points dropped by Panathinaikos. A couple of days later, the players and coaching stuff got paid for December, yet another sign that this season is very-very different to the previous one, when the team would go unpaid for months. Bad news is, captain Dimitris Kourbelis will miss this game, and Thursday’s one as well, in the Cup, still struggling with his latest injury. Left-back Emanuel Insúa is also out, due to cards.

Lamia vs Panathinaikos: Head to head Stats
Lamia have hosted Panathinaikos just once before in the Super League, in 2017, and drew 1-1. Interestingly, after that, they hosted them twice in the Cup, and beat them both times, 4-1(!) in 2017, and 1-0 ten days ago.
Lamia vs Panathinaikos: Prediction
Lamia may be third-to-last in the table, but at home they have lost only one of their last five matches, and that was to leaders PAOK, a narrow 0-1. On the other hand, Panathinaikos haven’t won any of their last five away games in the championship. With these in mind, I like Lamia’s chances of earning at least a draw, despite the fact that Panathinaikos are considered slight favorites to win the game.
