Lamia vs Panetolikos
Competition: Greece Super League
Date: 2 February 2019
Kick-off: 18:00 CET
Lamia were lucky(?) to see two major refereeing decisions go their way midweek, in their home game against Apollon Smyrnis. They won 2-1, their third Super League win in a row, all at home. They have a big Cup match coming up against Olympiakos, but there is no doubt that for Lamia, the Super League is their priority, to avoid relegation as early as possible. These last positive results have pushed them 10th in the table, on 20 points. It feels… surreal, but in their last three matches, they earned almost as many points as in their previous 15 combined(!). On Wednesday, Lamia announced the signing of 26-year-old winger Jean Luc Assubre. The Ivorian will play at Lamia until the end of the season, on loan from AEK Larnaca.
Panetolikos’ coach, Traianos Dellas, told reporters after his team’s 0-1 defeat at home to Panathinaikos midweek that it was the luckier team that won, not the better one. At the end of the day, the Agrinio side lost a game they should have done much better in, especially given that it was at home, and they played 11 vs 10 for about 35 minutes (Panathinaikos had a player sent-off in the 59th minute, a rather harsh refereeing decision). Panetolikos were one of the three Super League teams that didn’t play in the Cup round of 16, having gotten eliminated back in December. Instead of… seizing the opportunity, not having the “distraction” of the Cup, all they managed in their four games after the restart of the season, was two points, two from a possible 12. Poor. Still, they remain 7th in the table, just one point behind 6th-placed Xanthi. Given how things go in the remainder of the season, even the 6th spot in the final table may be good enough to earn a team a Europa League ticket.
