Lanus vs San Martin San Juan
Competition: Argentina Superliga
Date: 8 March 2019
Kick-off: 23:00 CET
Lanús make a very interesting story… Six matches into 2019 (five wins, one defeat at Boca Juniors), they have earned as many points as in their 15 matches in 2018 (in this season’s Superliga campaign), having “caught” teams that right now are earning Copa Sudamericama tickets for next season. Talleres, Unión and Lanús, all three are on 30 points, and it’s goal difference that keeps Lanús last among those three, 10th in the table. Plus, Pepe Sand, a club icon, returned to Lanús during the break after half a year in Colombia, and has now scored in five consecutive games (including last weekend’s 1-2 victory at San Martín de Tucumán). Luis Zubeldía’s team are finishing the season with their foot on the gas, aiming at a Copa Sudamericana ticket.
I doubt Luis Ardente got much sleep last Saturday, after San Martín San Juan’s goalless draw with Godoy Cruz at home. His team had a golden chance to score – and most probably win, as it looked like a typical one-goal game – when they got awarded a penalty, 37-year-old Ardente stepped up, but San Martín’s goalkeeper missed the target, sending the ball just above the horizontal post. They are now 23rd in the “promedio” table, meaning first among the teams below the relegation line. Patronato are a single point ahead of them, the situation is still manageable, but with only four matches left, San Martín find themselves in a position that they have to fight for points in all matches, even when visiting one of the hottest teams in the country the last month and a half.
