Lanus vs Sporting Cristal
Competition: Copa Sudamericana
Date: 21 February 2018
Kick-off: 23:15 CET
After reaching the Copa Libertadores final last season, having to settle for a “simple” Copa Sudamericana participation is a bit of a let-down for Lanús, the second best team among those who didn’t qualify for the Copa Libertadores from Argentina last season. A few days ago they lost 3-1 at Racing Club. Same lineup that started their previous game against River Plate, a game they won 1-0, but… totally different result. Actually, there was one change; central midfielder Fernando Barrientos got seriously injured against River, had to leave the pitch halfway through the first half, Gastón Lodico took his place, and he is the one who started the game at Racing Club as well. As for Barrientos, he will stay sidelined for at least three months. Lanús are 22nd(!) in Argentina’s Superliga, among 28 teams, on 18 points from 16 matches.
Alianza Lima hadn’t lost at home in 462 days; they lost on Sunday to Sporting Cristal, the best possible result Sporting could have hoped for before flying to Argentina. They took the lead right after the half-hour mark from the penalty spot, Alianza were left with 10 men, and Ballón’s goal in the 67th minute put the game to bed, a huge win for Sporting, their second in two matches at the start of the new season in Peru. The team were welcomed by several fans in Buenos Aires when they landed there, Peruvians who live in Argentina’s capital city. Sporting earned the last Copa Sudamericana ticket from Peru last season, being the fourth best team among those that didn’t qualify for the Copa Libertadores.

Lanus vs Sporting Cristal: Head to head Stats
This is the first game ever between these two.
Lanus vs Sporting Cristal: Prediction
Lanús are definitely not the same team that reached the Copa Libertadores final last season. Are they that different they can’t even beat Sporting Cristal at home? I think not. I’m under the impression that their problem in Argentina’s Superliga is not just a… bad form one, but a psychological one as well. They seem to lack motive. The Sudamericana is a whole different case, it’s Lanús’ chance to shine again, and I expect them to look at their best.
Lanus vs Sporting Cristal: Betting Tips
A simple Lanús win is at 1.57. For more than that, I would gamble with “Lanús and under 2.5 goals”, at 3.20, which pays much better than “Lanús to win and keep a clean sheet” (2.30). I expect a 1-0 or 2-0.
