LASK vs Club Brugge
Competition: UEFA Champions League
Date: 20 August 2019
Kick-off: 21:00 CET
LASK were awesome in both games against Basel in the third qualifying round, and earned what they deserved, a ticket to the playoffs. After beating them 1-2 in Switzerland in the first leg, they beat them again 3-1 at home last week. On Saturday, they hosted newly-promoted Swarovski Tirol in Austria’s championship, and needed an 81st-minute goal to avoid defeat (1-1). They dropped two points, their first in four matches. Valérien Ismaël, their coach, rotated heavily, leaving most of his regulars out. Even so, he felt LASK deserved all three points, and actually looked furious at the referee, blaming him for committing a string of important mistakes, all going against his team. Ismaël said that to eliminate Club Brugge, “a team better than Basel”, LASK will need to play with “courage and joy”.
One thing LASK’s coach has in common with his Club Brugge counterpart, Philippe Clement, is that both were left fuming at the referees last weekend. Modest Eupen managed to snatch a point (0-0) in Brugge, taking advantage of the fact that Clement’s team are in the middle of crucial UEFA CL qualifiers and playoffs. The Belgian side played their part in producing a memorable game last week, when they visited Dynamo Kiev. Three times they went down, 1-0, 2-1, 3-2, but all three they answered back (3-3). Actually, they would have qualified even if they had lost 3-2, as they had beaten Dynamo 1-0 in Belgium in the first leg. It’s worth mentioning that Clement’s rotation was nowhere near as heavy as that of Ismaël at LASK. Club Brugge had “just” three changes in their starting lineup last weekend, compared to who was on the pitch at kickoff in Kyiv.

The hosts are considered favorites to win this game. I underestimated them against Basel, but I wouldn’t go that far as to suggest their victory in this match.
